This semester, I began graduate school. GRADUATE SCHOOL… I still can’t believe it. One of the major differences I have noticed so far is the amount of assigned readings for each class meeting I have. I spend A LOT of time reading. After noticing that I read with headphones on, a few people have recently asked me what kind of music I listen to while reading. So, I’d thought I share one of my favorite genres with y’all.
Movie scores. They are awesome. Classical music can get a bit tedious and annoying sometimes (don’t hate), but movie scores are so interesting. The music builds and descends a lot, usually to follow the movie plot (obviously), so it keeps my attention but isn’t too distracting to the point that it pulls my attention away from my books. Many studies have been done on students listening to music while studying like in this article. Choosing the right type of music can improve cognitive performance according to an article on studentpulse.com. Choosing music without lyrics is less distracting. Also songs you aren’t familiar with are great too because they prevent you from following along and getting distracted. I tend to listen to my music at a relatively low level through headphones, enough to drown out noises from my surroundings but not loud enough to cloud my mind from reading.
