Kevin Garrett appears from behind a small curtain at Deep Ellum Art Co. in Dallas, TX on Tuesday, May 28th. The young crowd cheers with excitement as Kevin takes to his keyboard to kick off the night.
Casually dressed in a denim jacket and black framed glasses, Kevin commands the room with his smooth vocals and poetic lyrics. The crowd’s excitement and anxiousness is quickly put to ease as soon as Kevin’s effortless vocals swoon from the speakers.
Kevin takes a moment to welcome the crowd and chats about his recent album release, Hoax, out 2 months at this point. Chit chat between Kevin and the crowd fills each song break with ease and a sense of true friendship. Kevin spoke on his first memories playing in Dallas at The Kessler opening for his friend James Vincent McMorrow, joked about getting a tattoo, and flirted with the idea of a marriage proposal from an audience member.
Bandmate and former Dallasite, Elliott Skinner was a special guest performer, sharing some new music from an upcoming solo project. You might be familiar with his work from his New York based group, Thirdstory. The performance left the crowd, Kevin, and myself completely speechless. Kevin nervously followed with another song, still raving about Elliott after he was done. Skinner definitely did something special there.
The setlist carried everything. Songs from the new album Hoax, songs from his 14 year-old self, and even a sweet cover of Billie Eilish’s, when the party’s over, with IMPECCABLE falsetto.
There were moments when Kevin was alone on stage and singing with just his keyboard. He escapes the room and makes you feel like you’re peeping in on a personal moment he’s having alone in his New York apartment with his piano. The song ends, and suddenly he’s transported back into the room.
The entire production of the evening was really perfect for the space. The stage lighting really made the show feel more special and grand on an intimate level. A nice upgrade from a fabric backdrop and single spotlight (if you’re lucky) you typically get at a gig this size.
Kevin Garrett has IT. The songwriting, the voice, the personality, a FANTASTIC band and crew… It’s all there. The makings of a massive star.
